The wildlife tour is aimed to discover beauty of “Shikahogh” state reserve, ancient Plane Grove and wild Bezoar Goats.
First of all, you will visit Vayots Dzor. It is a province, which lies at the southeastern end of the country. It is home to many ancient landmarks and tourist attractions in Armenia including the Areni-1 cave complex and Areni-1 winery of the Chalcolithic period, the 8th-century Tanahat Monastery, the 10th-century Smbataberd fortress, and the 13th-century Noravank monastery. Vayots Dzor is also home to the popular spa-town of Jermuk. It was a popular destination during the Soviet era and nowadays is still famous for its hot springs and mineral water brands bottled in the town. It is attractive for its fresh air, waterfalls, artificial lakes, walking trails, the surrounding forests and mineral water pools. Syunik is the southernmost province of Armenia. It is bordered by the Vayots Dzor Province from the north. Shikahogh, is a village and rural community in the Syunik Province of Armenia. The name originated from meaning Red land. It is famous by Bezoar Goats.
Yerevan – Jermuk – Shikahogh village
We leave from Yerevan at 8 o’clock in the morning, visit the fortress Khor Virap (17th century), the monastery complex Noravank (13-14th centuries), also we will dispense the canyon in Noravank. Afterwards, we will visit one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Armenia – Jermuk, we will have a small excursion in Jermuk city. Then we will go to the village Shatin, where the Bezoar goats observation point is located. We will have the chance to watch the wild inhabitants of rocks – Bezoar goats (registered in the “Red Book” of the Republic of Armenia.)
Overnight in village Shikahogh
Shikahogh village – left of Meghri highway – Tsav village
The day will start with the viewing the “Shikahogh” state reserve from the observatory in the village Shikahogh (by car). The road continues to the west, to the left of Meghri highway, the village Tsav, the waterfall Tsav, as the inhabitants name it “Chrchr”, also we will see the medieval one hinged arch bridge with 10 meters height. Near the river we can find a copious fountain, where we will have a rest. There is a small path through the forest starting near the same river, where after one kilometer walk we will reach to the medieval dilapidated church Ksajur with rough stonework, it is on the southern side. A small pool was built inside the church. There is a source of mineral water in the middle of that church, the legend says that it can heal some diseases. We will find some dwelling traces, graves, the landscape is mountainous, forested.
Overnight in village Shikahogh
Shikahogh village – Srashen village – Tsav village – Nerkin Hand village – Yerevan
The trip starts in the village Shikahogh, continues to the village Srashen, in the St. Hripsime’s church (on foot). Also we visit the only natural stands of Fagus orientalis in the southern part of Armenia. Afterwards, we will go to the church located in the village Nerkin Hand (by car), we will visit the village Tsav, and the bridge across the river, and the Plane Grove. The Plane Grove is a state sanctuary, which is located in the eastern part of the reserve, and was created to protect the biggest natural stands of Platanus orientalis in Caucasus. Now, more than thousand Plane trees grow, which are more than 200-1000 years old, have more than 30-36 meters height. The boles of this trees have more than 3 meters diameter, you can also find trees which have huge hollows. The Greek walnuts, Caucasian hackberries and other species registered in the “Red Book” also grow here.
