Armenian Bird Census Council & Ecotour Tour company are inviting birdwatchers to visit our contrasting country and to record about 150 bird species, including such specialties as Caspian Snowcock, Alpine Accentor, White-winged Snowfinch, Radde’s Accentor, White-throated Robinwide, Persian Wheatear, White-tailed Lapwing and number of others. Bird observations will be supplemented by beautiful scenarios of semi-desert hills, high-mountains, deep canyons and clear lakes. The birding sites often provide additional opportunities for observation of butterflies, dragonflies, damselflies, flowers, and sometimes even large mammals, such as Bezoar Goat, Brown Bear, etc. The tour is lead by professional guide. The notes, taken during visits of the target areas, will be provided for preparation of European Breeding Bird Atlas 2 and the participants will be properly acknowledged. Yerevan – Vedi hills – Yerevan

Arrival, check in, little rest and breakfast.

Travel to Vedi Hills in vicinity of Vedi towns where will visit a unique gorge for semi-desert birds, which include Isabelline, Black-eared, and Finsch’s Wheatears, Trumpeter Finch, Rufous-tailed Bush Robins, and Long-legged Buzzard. Gorge is often visited by Cinereous Vultures.

Yerevan – Dilijan

Breakfast in the hotel and after will visit forested areas in outskirts of Dilijan. Here we will mainly focuse on observation of forest birds where the target species are Semi-collared and Red Breasted Flycatchers, Hawfinch, Green Warbler, Chiffchaf (ssp. abietinus), Great and Medium (ssp. caucasicus) Spotted and Green Woodpeckers. In the second part of the day will visit Haghartsin monastery, where also can observe some of the species that we missed at previous spot.

Dilijan – Lake Sevan – Yeghegnadzor

Breakfast at the hotel.

Will travel along the shore of the Lake Sevan and visit Lichk area – small lakes in vicinity of the Lake Sevan. This area is famous for variety of waterfowl, shorebirds and passerines, such as Mountain Chiffchaff (ssp. lorenzi). The resident pairs of Marsh Harrier and Goshawk are flying around, searching for prey. After we will continue travelling towards Yeghegnadzor through a mountain pass located at about 2,300 meters a.s.l. The area is covered with wet meadows where will look for the black headed subspecies of Yellow Wagtail (ssp. feldeggi). Will reach Yeghegnadzor where will check-in into hotel for two-night stay.

Yeghegnadzor – Vardenis mountains – Yeghegnadzor

Early breakfast at the hotel and after we will travel to high mountain area with the main purpose to see Caspian Snowcock and other high mountain specialists, such as Crimson-winged Finch, Red-fronted Serin, and White-winged Snowfinch. On our way back from the mountains we will visit the Noravank gorge with the main purpose to see Western and Eastern Rock Nuthatches.

P.S. The weather can be highly variable – from freezing winds with snow in the high mountains to heat in the semi-deserts. The amount of physical effort required is generally easy to moderate although it will be necessary to walk up some steep grassy slopes to view high altitude species if the snow level is high.

Yeghegnadzor – Armash – Yerevan

Breakfast at the hotel.

Travel towards Ararat Plain and after to Yerevan. On the way will stop near Arpa River to observe Penduline Tit, Kingfisher, Marsh, and Cetti’s Warbler. We will continue our travel through the fairly small mountain pass (about 1,700 m a.s.l.) which will lead us to Armash fish farming ponds where will spend the rest of the day looking for Blue-cheeked Bee-eater, European Roller and wide variety of water-birds including Pygmy Cormorant, Little Bittern, Purple and Squacco Herons and Black-crowned Night-heron. The reed-beds resound with calls of Reed, Great Reed and Paddyfield Warbler, whilst open waters have Marbled and Ferruginous Ducks and Red-crested Pochards. Whiskered, White-winged, Black and Little Terns hawk over the pools for insects, whilst water meadows and muddy areas have nesting Glossy Ibis and White-tailed Lapwing. Also on the way will be able to spot Menetrie’s Warbler.

Yerevan – Ourts Mountains – Yerevan

We will travel to “Urtsasar” mountain where will visit a semi-deserted area with the main aim to find Persian Wheatears, White-throated Robins, Upcher’s and Orphean Warblers, Short-toed and Greater Short-toed Larks, and Long-legged Buzzard.

Yerevan – Aragats mountain – Debet river gorge – Dzorages

Breakfast at the hotel.

Most of the day we will spend on Aragats mountain. Will do birding from the lower dry steppe to the alpine meadow at 3200 meters, and will look for Bimaculated Lark, Common Stonechat, Bluethroat (magna race), Radde’s Accentors, etc., as well as almost all species of forest raptors, breeding in Armenia, like Snake-Eagle, Lesser Spotted Eagle, Common Buzzard (menetriesi race), etc. After birding at Aragats mountain we will drive to the north – to the gorge of river Debet, where will check-in at the local hotel Dzorages.
