Aragats is the highest mountain of Armenia, it holds four peaks, the highest of which has an altitude 4090 m. The mountain holds variety of habitats: semi-desert on the bottom through mountain steppe and deciduous forest at the middle and sub-alpine belt on the high elevation. The Southern slope of the mountain is cut by deep canyon with high cliffs on both sides.
The variety of habitats creates a variety of birds and butterflies accordingly. Whereas the semi-desert attracts various wheatears, larks and scrub robins, forest provides habitat for all the forest raptors, living in Armenia, and the cliffs host rock nuthatches, rock thrushes, and vultures. The area also attracts various butterflies in almost all the families.
